How to avoid a WhatsApp Business ban when messaging customers
No one can guarantee a number will never be banned, but you can avoid what WhatsApp says causes bans: bulk or automated messages, unwanted messages, contact lists you do not own and repeated reports. Message only people who gave you their number and agreed to hear from you, and stop when they ask.

What gets a WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business number banned?
WhatsApp's Help Center says using WhatsApp in certain ways may cause an account to be banned. Its Terms of Service name bulk messaging, auto-messaging and auto-dialing as impermissible communications, and the Help Center states that receiving many messages at once will not get your account banned. The risk comes from what you send, not from how many customers write to you.
The page How to use WhatsApp responsibly lists the practices to avoid, and its wording applies to the Business app as much as to personal WhatsApp.
- Unwanted messages: if a contact asks you to stop, remove the contact and do not message them again.
- Automated or bulk messages: do not bulk message, auto-message or auto-dial. WhatsApp says it uses machine learning and reports from users to detect accounts that send unwanted automated messages.
- Contact lists that are not yours: do not use numbers shared without consent, or data from illicit sources, to message people or add them to groups.
- Over-using broadcast lists: frequent broadcasts may lead people to report you, and WhatsApp says it bans accounts that are reported multiple times.
- Modified versions of WhatsApp, and creating accounts or groups in unauthorized or automated ways.
- Harvesting personal information from WhatsApp, including phone numbers, profile pictures and statuses.
Is there a safe number of messages per day on WhatsApp?
The WhatsApp pages cited in this guide, last checked on 22 October 2026, do not publish a daily message count that is safe or unsafe on the WhatsApp Business app. They describe signals instead: spam, automated or bulk messaging, and reports from people who did not want the message. Treat any tool or blog that quotes a fixed safe number as a guess.
A practical rule follows from those signals. A batch of order updates that customers just triggered carries less risk than the same number of promotions sent to people who never agreed to receive them.
What does WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy require?
The Business Messaging Policy covers businesses using WhatsApp Business products. The Help Center summarises the core rule in one line: a business may contact someone on WhatsApp only if the person has given the business their mobile number and agreed to be contacted by the business over WhatsApp.
- Opt-in: you are responsible for how you collect it and for following the law that applies to you.
- For the WhatsApp Business Platform, WhatsApp notes that a customer who contacts you has not by that act opted in to future proactive messages.
- Best practice is a clear opt-in for each kind of message and clear instructions to opt out, which you honour.
- Do not confuse, deceive, mislead, spam or surprise people, and keep an accurate business profile.
- People can block and report businesses. Heavy negative feedback can lead to limits or loss of access.
How do I send to many customers without breaking the rules?
There is no setting that makes unsolicited bulk messaging acceptable. What differs between the tools is who receives the message and what each one costs. Whichever you pick, the people on the list must have agreed to hear from you.
| Method | Who receives it | Main limit or rule |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcast list | Up to 256 contacts per list who saved your number | Free; frequent use may lead to reports; a monthly limit may apply in some countries; not available on WhatsApp Web, Windows or Mac |
| Group | Members who joined, up to 1,024 | Get permission before adding people and respect those who leave |
| Channel | Anyone who follows it | One-way updates; followers do not see your phone number |
| Business broadcast (Business app) | Customers you choose | Paid per delivered message; available in select countries only |
| WhatsApp Business Platform (API) | Customers who opted in | Template rules apply; Meta charges per message |
What is a restricted account, and what do I do if my account is banned?
A restricted account is a warning step. WhatsApp says recent activity may show signs of spam, automated or bulk messaging. While restricted, you can keep messaging contacts and groups you already chat with, but you cannot start chats or calls with new contacts, create groups, add members to groups or use linked devices, and you may be logged out of some linked devices. The restriction ends by itself, and WhatsApp notifies you. To see the time left, tap New Chat and choose a contact you have never chatted with.
A ban is different. If your number is banned, WhatsApp shows a message that the number cannot use WhatsApp. These are the steps WhatsApp gives.
- Open WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business and read the message on screen.
- Tap Request review. WhatsApp says most reviews are completed within 24 hours. If no review option appears, the ban is final and cannot be appealed.
- Wait for the notification with the decision. Contacting WhatsApp outside the review process, or through another user's account, does not speed it up.
- Ignore anyone who offers to unban the number for a fee. WhatsApp states that third-party services cannot ban or unban an account.
- Expect no access to chat history or backups while the account is banned. Keep order details in Shopify, not only in WhatsApp chats.
What is a safe-sending checklist for an online store?
- Collect consent in a clear place, such as a checkout checkbox or a first chat, and record when and how.
- Say who you are in the first line, and send one message per event.
- Include a way to stop, such as Reply STOP, and honour it the same day.
- Keep order messages to what the customer expects: confirmation, shipping and cancellation.
- Never use bought, scraped or old contact lists, and do not add customers to groups without permission.
- Do not use GB WhatsApp or other modified apps. WhatsApp says unofficial apps violate its Terms of Service and can lead to bans.
- Watch for blocks and complaints. If several customers block or report you, stop sending that message and review your list.
How does WhatsApp Pilot fit with these rules?
WhatsApp Pilot, a Shopify app by E-SAFQA, connects your own number as a linked device and sends messages tied to one customer's order: confirmation, fulfillment and cancellation notices. It does not send broadcasts or bulk campaigns. Abandoned Cart Recovery follows Shopify's WhatsApp marketing consent, skips opt-outs and STOP replies, and stops when the customer orders. Message History lists every send, skip and failure with its reason.
That design helps, but it is not a guarantee. WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy still applies to any business number, including one connected as a linked device, and only WhatsApp decides on restrictions.
Frequently asked questions
Can WhatsApp ban me for sending too many messages?
WhatsApp's rules target bulk, automated and unwanted messages and repeated reports, not a published count. The Help Center also says that receiving many messages at once will not get an account banned.
How do I send a mass message on WhatsApp without being banned?
Use broadcast lists for contacts who saved your number and opted in, groups or channels for community updates, or the Business Platform for large campaigns. None removes the rule that people must have agreed to hear from you.
What should I do if my WhatsApp Business number is banned?
Tap Request review in the app and wait for WhatsApp's notification. If there is no review option, the ban is final. WhatsApp says third-party services cannot unban an account.
What is a restricted WhatsApp account?
It is a temporary limit after activity that looks like spam, automated or bulk messaging. You cannot message new contacts or create groups until it ends, and it ends automatically.
Can I get banned for using WhatsApp automation?
WhatsApp's terms prohibit automated and bulk messaging. For the Business Platform, WhatsApp allows automated replies in the 24-hour window if customers can reach a person. Check the policy for your setup, because no tool can guarantee your number is safe.
Does WhatsApp Pilot send bulk messages?
No. It sends messages triggered by one customer's own order or checkout, and it does not send broadcasts or campaigns.
