WhatsApp automation for Shopify stores
WhatsApp automation for a Shopify store means sending a message automatically when something happens in the store: an order is created, a checkout is abandoned, an order ships. The useful automations are few and transactional. This guide covers the triggers, timing, consent and templates, and how WhatsApp Pilot implements them.

The automations that pay off
| Trigger | Message | Type | Status in WhatsApp Pilot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Order created | Order confirmation with order number, total and status link | Transactional | Available now |
| Checkout abandoned | Up to three reminders with the recovery link and an optional discount | Marketing (needs consent) | Available on Pro |
| Order cancelled in Shopify | Cancellation notice with the order name | Transactional | Available now |
| Variant back in stock | Alert to shoppers who requested it on WhatsApp | Requested by the shopper | Available now |
| Order fulfilled | Shipping notice with the tracking link | Transactional | Available on Pro, one notice per fulfillment |
| Cash-on-delivery order | Confirmation request before dispatch | Transactional | Handled through the confirmation template today; dedicated flow planned |
Timing rules that work
- Confirmations: immediately or within seconds of the order. Customers are still looking at their phone.
- Recovery reminders: first message 15 minutes to 3 hours after abandonment, then 6 to 48 hour gaps, and never more than three messages.
- Stop conditions: a completed order must cancel every pending reminder. Automation without a stop condition annoys customers.
Consent is part of the automation, not a checkbox
A confirmation is tied to an order the customer just placed. A reminder to come back and buy is marketing. Good automation enforces the difference in code: WhatsApp Pilot sends confirmations only after you switch on order messages for your connected number, and sends reminders only to customers who used the same phone number at checkout and already allowed WhatsApp marketing from your store.
Templates in five languages
Write the message as your customer would read it, keep it under five lines, include the order name and one link. WhatsApp Pilot ships default templates in English, Arabic, French, Portuguese and Spanish with variables such as the customer's first name, order name, order total and store name, and previews them with sample data before you activate.
Tools: generic automation vs a Shopify app
Generic WhatsApp automation tools and workflow builders can be wired to Shopify through webhooks, but you then own the consent logic, the retries, the dedupe and the logs. A Shopify app that listens to the store's own webhooks and keeps a message history is simpler for a single store. Whichever you choose, insist on a log of every message and the reason any message was skipped.
Frequently asked questions
Can I automate WhatsApp without the Business API?
Yes, with a linked-device app such as WhatsApp Pilot. You lose read receipts and interactive buttons, and you keep a flat price.
Can I send bulk promotions with automation?
WhatsApp Pilot does not offer broadcasts. Bulk marketing on WhatsApp belongs on the Business API with approved templates and opt-in lists.
