Designing a three-message WhatsApp recovery sequence
A recovery sequence is one to three WhatsApp reminders sent after a customer abandons checkout, each with the recovery link and, optionally, a time-limited discount. The design that works: a quick first nudge, a second message hours later, and a last message with an offer, all cancelled the moment the order completes.

Timing
This is WhatsApp Pilot's default schedule. Later steps can be spaced 3, 6, 12, 24 or 48 hours after the previous one, and the sequence never exceeds three messages.
| Step | When | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 1. First reminder | 30 minutes after abandonment (15 min, 1 h or 3 h are the alternatives in WhatsApp Pilot) | Catch a customer who was interrupted |
| 2. Second reminder | 6 hours after abandonment | Address hesitation: shipping, sizes, payment |
| 3. Recovery offer | 24 hours after abandonment | A time-limited discount for the undecided |
Messages
- Step 1 (EN): Hi {{customer_first_name}} 👋 We noticed you didn't finish your order from {{store_name}}. Your items are still waiting 🛍️ Complete your order here: {{checkout_url}}
- Step 1 (AR): مرحباً {{customer_first_name}} 👋 لاحظنا إنك ما كملت طلبك من {{store_name}}. منتجاتك لسه بانتظارك 🛍️ أكمل طلبك من هنا: {{checkout_url}}
- Step 2: ask one question that removes friction, for example whether they need help with sizes or delivery, and repeat the link.
- Step 3: state the offer (a percentage discount or free shipping), its validity in hours and the link. Keep it to three lines.
Discounts without training customers to wait
Offer a discount only on the last step, keep it short-lived (WhatsApp Pilot allows 1 to 24 hours) and make the code unique and single-use. WhatsApp Pilot creates the code in Shopify for that customer and verifies it before sending. The last step can offer free shipping instead of a percentage: the code makes eligible shipping rates free and does not change product prices.
Stop and safety rules
- Completed order cancels all remaining steps.
- Only customers with WhatsApp marketing consent and the same checkout phone number receive the sequence.
- One sequence per checkout; a newer checkout from the same customer replaces the older one.
- A step that is far overdue (for example after downtime) is skipped rather than sent late.
Measuring
Judge the sequence by completed orders, not by messages sent. Message History shows every reminder and why any was skipped; compare your completed orders and discount-code usage in Shopify before and after you activate the sequence.
