Free shipping in a WhatsApp abandoned-checkout reminder
A recovery reminder can carry a free-shipping code instead of a percentage discount. In WhatsApp Pilot the code is a native Shopify shipping discount, unique to the customer and time-limited. It makes eligible shipping rates free; it does not change product prices.

How the free-shipping code behaves
- It is created in Shopify as a shipping discount for that customer, single-use and valid for the 1 to 24 hours you set.
- It is verified before the message is sent; if the code cannot be confirmed, the reminder does not promise it.
- It does not apply to local pickup, to products that are not shipped, or when delivery is already free.
- It does not reduce product prices and is not combined with a percentage offer in the same step.
How to word the message
Say that the code gives free shipping on eligible delivery options and state how long it is valid. Do not tell the customer that the delivery fee has already been removed: the discount is applied at checkout only if the order qualifies.
Where to place it in the sequence
- First reminder, 30 minutes after abandonment: no offer.
- Second reminder, 6 hours: no offer, or answer the likely objection.
- Third reminder, 24 hours: free shipping or a percentage discount, valid for a short window.
Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify automatically offer free shipping in abandoned-cart recovery?
Shopify's own recovery email can include a discount you set up. In WhatsApp Pilot each reminder step can offer free shipping through a unique Shopify shipping discount code, sent only to customers who allowed WhatsApp marketing.
Will free shipping always apply?
No. It applies to eligible shipping rates at checkout. Pickup, non-shipped products and orders that already have free delivery are not affected.
