Shopify WhatsApp integration: the complete guide
Integrating WhatsApp with Shopify ranges from a one-tap chat button to automatic order and recovery messages sent from your own number. Shopify itself sends email and SMS, not WhatsApp, so every WhatsApp integration goes through an app or the WhatsApp Business API. Here is each option, what it requires and how to pick.

Level 1: a chat button on the storefront
A floating WhatsApp button lets shoppers start a chat with you. It needs no API and no consent, because the shopper initiates. Install it as a Theme App Extension so it survives theme changes.
Level 2: order confirmations from your number
When Shopify creates an order, an app can send a WhatsApp confirmation with the order number, total and a link to the order status page. This is transactional. With a linked-device app it comes from your own number without per-message fees; with an API app it is a utility template with Meta's per-message rate.
Level 3: abandoned-checkout reminders
Shopify records an abandoned checkout once the customer has entered contact details and left for more than ten minutes. An app can then send a reminder with the recovery link. Because it is marketing, the customer must have opted in to WhatsApp marketing; apps should enforce that automatically and cancel reminders when the order completes.
Level 4: Shopify Flow, Zapier and workflow tools
Workflow tools can call a WhatsApp provider when Shopify events fire. They are flexible but you build and maintain the consent checks, retries and logging yourself, and most WhatsApp actions in those tools require an API provider account.
Level 5: the WhatsApp Business API
For campaigns, chatbots, multiple agents and read receipts, the API is the right layer, through a Business Solution Provider or an app built on the Cloud API. Expect business verification, approved templates and per-message charges by category and country.
