Shopify order updates on WhatsApp
A Shopify order passes through several states: placed, paid, possibly cancelled or refunded, fulfilled with tracking, and delivered. Shopify tells the customer about each by email and, where enabled, SMS. WhatsApp Pilot sends the order confirmation with an order status link, the cancellation notice, and a fulfillment notice with tracking for each new shipment on WhatsApp; it does not send carrier delivery updates.

The lifecycle of a Shopify order
Every order follows roughly the same path. The customer places it at checkout and Shopify creates the order. Payment is captured immediately or later, depending on your payment settings. You may cancel the order, or refund part or all of it. When you ship, you fulfill the order and add a tracking number; with supported carriers, Shopify can follow the shipment to out for delivery and delivered. The customer can watch all of this on the order status page, which Shopify links from its own emails.
Shopify's customer notifications map onto these states. The list in Settings → Notifications includes order confirmation, order cancelled, order refund, shipping confirmation, shipping update, out for delivery and delivered, among others. Shopify describes them as automated emails and SMS messages. There is no WhatsApp option in that list, so any WhatsApp update has to come from an app that reacts to the same order events.
What WhatsApp Pilot sends today, and what it does not
We would rather you know the limits before you install than discover them afterwards. The table lists each lifecycle event, what Shopify does natively, and what WhatsApp Pilot does on WhatsApp as of this writing.
| Order event | Shopify (email / SMS) | WhatsApp Pilot on WhatsApp |
|---|---|---|
| Order placed | Order confirmation | Order Confirmation message with order name, total, store name and a short order status link (Pro) |
| Order cancelled | Order cancelled notification | Order Cancellation notice, one per order, about the cancellation only (Pro) |
| Order refunded | Order refund notification | Nothing; refunds stay in Shopify and in your chat |
| Order fulfilled / shipped | Shipping confirmation with tracking | Order Fulfillment notice for each new fulfillment, including split shipments, with carrier, tracking number and tracking link when Shopify has them (Pro) |
| Shipping update, out for delivery, delivered | Carrier-based notifications where supported | No separate message; editing tracking does not send a second notice. Delivery can start Repeat Purchase, a thank-you code for opted-in customers (Pro) |
How the order automations work
- Order Confirmation: Shopify notifies the app when an order is created. The app resolves the phone number on the order, renders your template, waits for the delay you chose (immediately or a few seconds), and sends from your own connected number.
- Order status link: the confirmation carries a short, store-branded link on your own domain that opens the Shopify order status page. Once you fulfill the order and add tracking, that page shows the fulfillment and tracking details Shopify has, so the one link keeps working as the order progresses. Each tap is counted in Analytics; the link is valid for up to 90 days.
- Order Fulfillment: when you fulfill all or part of an order in Shopify, the app sends one notice for that fulfillment, immediately or 10 minutes later. The text says the order has been prepared rather than shipped, so it stays true for local pickup and manual fulfillment, and it adds the carrier, tracking number and tracking link only when Shopify has them. Changing the tracking later does not send another message.
- Order Cancellation: when you cancel in Shopify, the app sends one notice with the order name and store name. The app does not cancel orders or process refunds, and it does not accept template wording that promises a refund, because the refund decision is made in Shopify's cancel dialog.
- Message History records every send, skip and failure with the reason, for example no phone number on the order or WhatsApp disconnected. Delivered and read receipts are not available with a linked-device connection, so the app does not show them.
Templates and variables
The order automations use plain-text templates with defaults in English, Arabic, French, Portuguese and Spanish that you edit in the app and preview with sample order data. The confirmation template can use {{customer_first_name}}, {{order_name}}, {{order_total}} and {{store_name}}, plus the order status link block. The cancellation template uses {{customer_first_name}}, {{order_name}} and {{store_name}}. The fulfillment template adds {{carrier}}, {{tracking_number}} and {{tracking_url}}. Emoji and line breaks are fine.
A good confirmation is short: greet the customer by first name, name the order, state the total, give the link and say how to reach you. If you take cash on delivery, add a line asking the customer to reply if anything in the order is wrong; a dedicated COD flow is planned, but today the confirmation template is how merchants handle it. Ready-made wording for both messages is on the free templates tool at /tools/whatsapp-message-templates on this site.
Consent: which updates need an opt-in
- Order confirmations, fulfillment notices and cancellation notices are transactional: they are about an order the customer just placed with you. WhatsApp Pilot does not require marketing consent for them, but it does require you, the merchant, to switch on order messages for your connected number, and the order must have a phone number.
- Abandoned checkout reminders are marketing. The app sends them only to customers who used the same phone number at checkout and already allowed WhatsApp marketing from your store; everyone else is skipped and the reason is logged.
- Do not turn a transactional flow into a promotion. A confirmation that ends with a discount code for the next order is a marketing message to a customer who may not have opted in.
- WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy applies to every business number, including one connected as a linked device. Keep messages relevant to the order, one per event, and answer replies promptly.
When the WhatsApp Business API is the better route
WhatsApp Pilot connects your existing number as a linked device: scan a QR code, write free-text templates, pay a flat app price. That suits a single store sending transactional messages. The WhatsApp Business Platform (the official API) is the better choice when you need delivered and read receipts, interactive buttons, high volumes across many agents, or a number dedicated to automation. On the API, business-initiated messages such as order updates use pre-approved templates in the utility category, and Meta charges per delivered template message at rates that vary by category and by the recipient's country.
If carrier delivery updates such as out for delivery are essential for your store, an API-based app can send them, at per-message cost. If order confirmation, fulfillment with tracking and cancellation are what you need, the linked-device route covers them without template approvals or per-message fees.
Setup checklist
- Install WhatsApp Pilot and upgrade to Pro. Connect your WhatsApp number by scanning the QR code, then switch on order messages for that number.
- Open Automations, create an Order Confirmation flow, pick the template language, edit it and preview it with sample data. Activate it.
- Create Order Fulfillment and Order Cancellation flows the same way. Each runs independently, so you can use any combination.
- Place a test order with your own phone number, fulfill it, then place another and cancel it, and check each message and Message History.
- Keep Shopify's email notifications on. WhatsApp adds a channel; it does not replace the record the customer gets by email, and email stays the channel for carrier delivery updates.
Frequently asked questions
Can Shopify send order status updates on WhatsApp by itself?
No. Shopify's customer notifications are email and SMS. An app has to listen to the order events and send the WhatsApp message.
Does WhatsApp Pilot send a shipping or delivery update on WhatsApp?
It sends one Order Fulfillment notice for each new fulfillment, including split shipments, with the carrier, tracking number and tracking link when Shopify has them (Pro). It does not send carrier updates such as out for delivery or delivered.
Is the order status link a tracking number?
No. It opens the Shopify order status page, which shows the tracking information Shopify has once you fulfill the order.
Do order confirmations on WhatsApp need marketing consent?
No. They are transactional. You still have to switch on order messages for your connected number, and the order needs a phone number.
Can I see whether the customer read the confirmation?
No. Delivered and read receipts are not available with a linked-device connection. Message History shows sent, skipped with a reason, or failed.
What happens if the customer only entered an email at checkout?
There is no number to send to. The message is skipped and Message History shows why. Shopify's email confirmation still goes out.
